Street artisti e writer, serigrafi e realizzatori di stencil, muralisti e video mapper, fumettisti e small press: siamo ovunque imprendibili e raggiungibilissimi, in mostra e completamente invisibili.

Today Art is a prison.
In the form of a request, this sentence was put in 1981 by an Argentine artist who sent a blank sheet to 200 people to prepare a conference on the subject in Palermo. Today this question no longer exists. Art is a prison. The keys are held in the hands of a capital and a market that manages every hour of air and every space of survival. BUT…

But today a great mass of people who really make Art, even with the difficulty of recognizing themselves in the word artist, is in action, working underground as for the market and yet under the eyes of all. Street artists and writers, screen printers and stencil makers, muralists and video mappers, cartoonists and small presses: we are everywhere uncatchable and very reachable, on display and completely invisible. This population of individuals of genres and differences moves through urban spaces and landscapes, claims the right to experiment and to elaborate out of style, school and storytelling. This multiplicity moves through the spaces that over the years have escaped the mechanism of production of rent and consumption that has made impractical huge sectors of the urban fabric. These spaces are the Squats, places that we as a movement have ripped from rent with a continuous, meticulous, careful work of preserving local cultural values, by building networks and drawing horizons.

The Squats are the reservoirs of possible visions, of difference; the possibility of a world outside a pre-established pattern of consumption. CRACK! Festival is part of this area of the world, it is composed of the most unpredictable and multiform molecules of this unavailability to the capital project. CRACK claims this position and claims the right to an Art out of prison. An Art of sharing and networking, an Art that needs OPEN spaces to move its capacity for criticism and process. To generate and regenerate the restless looks of those who have never won, of course, but also never gave up. For this CRACK! it is even more strongly allied to the path of spaces that do not accept closure and separation, which offer community and cooperation, sharing and participation. Spaces we are entitled to, as we have the right to breathe and speak. Spaces in which we participate with all possible visions. Spaces that the capital, supported by the government policies, today more than ever it puts them in check, assigning these places to the evacuation, to the abandonment, to the closure and separation from the urban fabric. A closing choice that does not only concern urban spaces, but the sea’s open ones, imaginary and thoughtful ones. It concerns the possibility itself of expression, of another vision of existence.

We cannot but take a position of liberation and openness in the face of this return to order and preventive imprisonment of sensitivities and life forms: CRACK! supports the city rally on June 22 at 4:00 pm from Piazza Vittorio, for an open city and against evictions, Rome does not close!

CRACK! OPEN, as every urban space should be, June 2019
